The phthalimide is treated with potassium hydroxide (KOH) to form a potassium salt, which undergoes nucleophilic substitution with an alkyl halide to yield the desired alkyl amine.

- Reductive Amination: Reductive amination is a versatile method for the synthesis of alkyl amines. It involves the reaction of a carbonyl compound (aldehyde or ketone) with an amine in the presence of a reducing agent, such as sodium borohydride (NaBH4) or lithium aluminum hydride (LiAlH4).
